Surgically Facilitated Orthodontic Treatment (SFOT also known as Wilckodontics) is a type of orthodontic treatment that utilizes periodontal surgery in conjunction with braces or Invisalign to achieve a greater and faster movement that would be possible with just braces alone. The bodies healing response to the periodontal surgery (gum and/or bone grafting) will often accelerate orthodontic tooth movement for a period of about 3-6 months after the surgery, allowing the duration of orthodontic treatment to be shortened quite significantly. The magnitude of bite correction (jaw correction), that can be obtained with SFOT is not quite as great as what can be done with orthognathic surgery, but can come close. However periodontal surgery is often much more affordable with less down time than orthognathic surgery. For some individuals with thin tissue types and bites, SFOT can be more effective than orthognathic surgery because orthodognathic surgery does not address recession or bone loss which can happen with orthodontic treatment (especially in adults).
